Here is our list of the top 10 things that break on a caravan. Knowing about these common caravan issues in advance can help you to prepare yourself for your travels. Carrying a couple of caravan spare parts can keep you on the road or make having repairs carried out by a repairer much quicker and easier.
- Plumbing leaks – We recommend carrying replacement John Guest fittings and plumbing tape.
- Leaks/issues caused by the city water connection – carry a replacement pressure reducer.
- Fridge power – Carry spare fuses for the caravan and vehicle.
- Skylight/hatch lids leaking – There are about 8 common types of skylights / hatch lids. Knowing which hatch lid you need can allow you to order a spare and have it sent to you wherever you are – all you need to do is email or text us a pic of the hinge side.
- Main door handle breaking – breaking the main door handle can lock you in, or out, of your van. Having a spare gets you out of trouble quickly.
- Awning rafter tension knobs breaking / getting lost – these are the black knobs at about waist height. Different brands are NOT interchangable and for this reason we recommend that you carry spares for your particular awning.
- Trailer plug connection – carrying a 7/12 pin spare SOCKET and PLUG can get things working quickly again.
- Bulbs – We recommend carrying spare bulbs for exterior trailer lighting and interior lights, or consider LED lights.
- Cupboard handles/buttons breaking – its worth getting a couple of spares when your van is new as they go out of production.
- R clips for your weight distribution hitch snap up brackets and coupling lock – these don’t often break, but are frequently lost or stolen.
