All too often I hear stories of people who have issues with their caravans (or any other good for that matter!) that appear "just out of warranty". The fact is, many of these issues were probably apparent during the warranty period, and just not identified due to lack of maintenance or detailed inspection.
"But I would know if I had an issue. What's the point?"
A caravan combines a huge number of different systems and materials – from steel work and welding on the chassis, mechanical components of the suspension, structural timber framing, adhesives, sealants, plumbing, electrical and gas systems. Many people don't have the adqeuate skills to be able to confidently work across all areas of the van. People with a cabinet maker background will focus on issues with interior cupboards. People with electrical experience will focus on those systems. People which mechanical backgrounds will focus on wheels and suspension. All at the cost of the other 80% of the van.
Here's the Point
Recently, we had a new customer bring their van in for its first service with us. It has a full service history with the original dealer. It is "just out of extended warranty". We found a multitude of cracks along the chassis – both small and large. This is a critical issue and needed repairing urgently. However, even though the extended warranty covered such issues, being just 2 months out of warranty means it wasn't covered, and the expense was left with the owner.
If your caravan is still under warranty, and you are close to the end of the warranty period – it is very worthwhile having your van independently checked before the warranty expires.
An independent assessor can help you identify issues and future problems while the caravan is still under warranty. This allows you to have the items rectified with little or no out of pocket expense.
