All vans that weigh more than 2T need a break-away safety system.
This system applies the caravan's electric brakes in case of it becoming uncoupled from the tow vehicle. But it relies on its own internal battery being charged properly.
There are a few different types of break-away systems, and often they are hard to find, with many owners not even knowing about them. We check these systems as part of your regular servicing.
The internal batteries only last about 2 years even when maintained properly, so it is something that needs regular attention.
How to check?
The best way to check whether your break-away system is working, is - while hooked up - by pulling out the break-away pin from the black box on the draw bar, then driving forward. The wheels on the van should be locked up and prevent you driving forward. If not, there's a problem.
Just make sure you put the pin back once the test is done! The pin is re-usable so its not a problem testing it. As the pins are plastic, its also a good test for the pin as they do deterioriate and don't last forever!
