Get your holiday off to the best start by using our pre-holiday caravan checklist before you leave home. A quick check of the van will ensure you hit the road safely and with everything working so you won’t have the hassle of doing repairs on your holiday.
Caravan items to check:
Fridge:
- Working and the door is sealing. Some fridges take half a day (or overnight) to cool down to the optimal temperature. Allow time to check this
Electrics:
- Lights are working and you have a spare bulb or two
- 12V and 240V systems are working and you have spare fuses
- Batteries are fully charged
Plumbing:
- Give the tanks a flush out with fresh water and treat with chemicals
- Pipes, pumps and drains are working
- Toilet is working and empty
- You have toilet chemicals for the holiday
Gas:
- Hot water system is working
- Gas bottles are full
Safety:
- Your van’s packed weight is within the legal limits
- Items are secured safely
- Fire extinguisher is stored safely and not expired
Coupling:
- Van is secured to tow vehicle
- Safety chains are in good condition and secured
- Breakaway battery is working. For more information on testing your breakaway battery click here.
- Electrical wiring connections are in good shape and all the lights on the van are working
- Jockey wheel is working and stored securely
Brakes:
- Working. Test the brakes by taking a short drive
- Electronic Stability Control (if fitted) is connected and working
Wheels:
- Wheel nuts are tightened
- Tyres in good condition and inflated to the right tyre pressure. For details on checking your tyre pressure, read this article
- Spare wheel in good condition and inflated to right tyre pressure
Awning:
- Able to be rolled out, retracted and secured to the van
Stabilizers:
- Able to be raised, lowered and secured
Spares to have on hand:
- Fuses
- Light bulbs
- Toilet chemicals
- Tank chemicals
