Not that long ago, batteries were uncommon in caravans. Back then, there were a couple of ceiling lights that had both a 240V bulb and a 12V bulb. The 12V bulb would only work when the caravan was plugged into the tow vehicle - and sucking power from the starter battery of the car, through the 7 pin plug.
Man, how things have changed!
We've gone through this evolution of batteries becoming standard, then caravan systems becoming hybrid 12v / 240V systems, to the current landscape where new vans are predominately 12V powered from large battery banks - now mainly lithium systems - and the 240V side being the ancilliary/support components.
These new system are wonderfully functional, giving us huge amounts of power to extend our free camping capabilities, run more stuff for longer and generally making touring so much more comfortable.
With this technological progress, comes more complication and potentially more issues. Modern vans have a huge amount of electrics with multi-stage AC chargers, DC charges, wireless switching, remote cut out systems, smart phone connected batteries, bluetooth connected regulators, inverters, generators, mono or poly solar, state of charge monitors and more. Keeping all these items working in sync and problem free requires specialist knowledge and training.
