Wind-up campers have been popular for decades, with many makes like the Jayco Hawk and Jayco Finch still going strong. The winding mechanism is an often forgotten maintenance item and isn't worried about until it fails. 

The camper winch winding mechanism is a complicated bit of gear, generally hidden away and hard to access. A single braking winch is connected to each of the 4 telescoping pillars via steel cable, pulleys and slugs. Common issues are broken cables, broken winch, or stuck pillars.
