Towing mirrors improve your safety while towing by extending the angle of vision and allowing the driver to see the sides of the caravan or trailer and behind it.
Do you need tow mirrors?
Legally the driver is required to have a clear view of the road, and traffic, ahead, behind and to each side of the driver. For safety on the road and to make reversing more accurate the driver needs to be able to see both sides and back corners of the caravan and at least 20m behind the caravan. While a reversing camera on the back of the caravan is excellent for manoeuvering on site, it will not provide visibility of the sides of the caravan. Having good visibility of the sides of the caravan is essential to help the driver to avoid obstacles while manoeuvering in tight spots like car parks, caravan parks and fuel stations.
What type of tow mirrors are available?
There are a few options available with various methods of attaching to your vehicle including: clip-on mounting, strap-on mounting, magnetic mounting and full replacement towing mirrors which integrate perfectly with your vehicle. The mirrors vary in size, ease of use, vibrations and of course price.
Our bestselling tow mirrors are the Milenco range of clamp on mirrors and the full replacement Clearview mirrors.
The Milenco Aero 3 and Grand Aero 3 are a popular choice with our customers. They attach to the vehicle’s existing mirrors with a clamp and are designed to fit all vehicles. For ease of use the mirrors are able to be unscrewed without removing the clamps – great for quick removal when you are parked on site for the night. The Milenco range are well designed clamp-on towing mirrors and are a great budget option. Our customer feedback has been that these are easy to use and a great alternative to other strap-mounted mirrors.
The premium option and our top pick for towing mirrors are Clearview mirrors. They are a complete replacement for your existing side mirrors, available in black or chrome and are available to suit most vehicles. The Clearview design incorporates two mirror surfaces – a larger electically adjustable mirror for viewing the sides of your van and a smaller manually adjusted convex mirror for viewing into the traffic lanes to eliminate blindspots. Clearview mirrors are superior to other towing mirrors on the market in that they offer a wide extension and better visibility in a larger mirror without the vibrations that are a common effect of the clip-on mirror.
Clearview mirrors are integrated with the vehicle electrics and are great with the standard options but as technology in car mirrors has improved (think Blind Spot Monitoring, cameras etc), so have the Clearview mirrors. New options available include:
- Electrically operated fold-in and/or extension. This feature is wonderful for allowing you to easily fold in the mirrors once you have parked. Being able to also extend the mirrors with the push of a button makes life easy. The mirrors fold in and extend manually as a standard option.
- Cameras – if your tow vehicle features cameras as part of a 360 degree display then cameras can be added to the Clearview Mirrors
- Blind Spot Monitoring
- Indicators
The pricing for Clearview mirrors depends on a few factors for the specific model of vehicle and the features of your existing side mirrors including indicators, blind spot monitoring, cameras and even GPS. Cleariew warrant their mirrors for 36 months and have a full range of spare parts available. Installation of the Clearview mirrors can be carried out while you wait in our customer lounge.
