Battery chargers are the life source of your caravan if you are planning independent / free travel. A mains powered battery charger is the best way to get your caravan house batteries fully charged for the off-site days ahead.
There are hundreds of brands of battery chargers, from the cheapies to the exotic. Getting the right one shouldn't be a difficult process, but there are plenty of considerations along the way.
For travellers who want a quality charger, that simply goes about its job quietly – the CTEK range is hard to beat. The CTEK MXS range will charge most batteries including lead acid and AGM batteries, through its unique smart charging algorithm. There are a series of LED lights on the charger itself which indicates the charge level of the battery.
There are no complicated settings to master, just connect it to your batteries and it works.
For more advanced systems, we add a battery monitoring system like the Enerdrive eLite system, or move into the RedArc range of Battery Management Systems like the RedArc BMS1215i.
If looking to add solar to your system at a later date, it can be a wise move to invest in a dual mode DC-DC charger / solar regulator – like the RedArc BCDC, or a 3-way charger like the RedArc BMS1215i. The benefit of getting the setup right to start with, is you wont be faced with the issue of having to upgrade components in the future – where you will have to spend money again for the same function. Also, the integrated components don't fight each other when it comes to charging from multiple sources – e.g. a separate solar regulator and battery charger both think they should be managing the batteries, and fight each other. It gets worse when you add things like a DC-DC charger.
